This work is done on the stolen land of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Haudenosaunee and Wendake-Nionwentsïo peoples. Colonizers prevented and denied the Mississaugas of the Credit from exercising their treaty rights to hunt and fish here, as was outlined under Treaty No. 13a, 1805. This was a deliberate and malicious effort to displace the Indigenous communities native to this land.

It’s clear that all that was built here since this treaty was signed, and this land taken, is rooted in violence, harm, racism and exclusion. With all our current systems rooted in this same oppression, white supremacy, patriarchy, and colonialism, the violence and harm towards Indigenous communities is ongoing.

I recognize my privilege as a light-skinned woman of colour, and how the freedoms I experience, and the opportunities afforded to me as a settler on this land, comes on the backs of Indigenous kin. I am committed to centering Truth and Reconciliation in my work, and celebrating, honouring, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities by continuing to learn, unlearn, reflect + act.
